Zahn was born as Zahn Tokiya-ku McClarnon on October 24, 1966, in Denver, Colorado. His middle name translates to “the first to come,” while his first name, Zahn, is a tribute to his great-great-great-uncle, an artist who was an elder on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Zahn has a fraternal twin brother.

Zahn has already explained that he has German blood in him. “My father was Irish and I also have some German blood. I’m just a dog. I think we’re all pigs,” he told American Cowboy.

While his mother lived on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, Zahn was raised by his grandparents. Zahn explained that his childhood was tough. He grew up in the northern plain states including Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana.

He attended a public school which he says made him feel left out. Early in his life, Zahn became addicted to drugs and alcohol, something he believes to be in his blood as his mother and brother were also alcoholics.

However, Zahn, like his mother, remained pure and was officially sober in 2000, at the age of 34. Unfortunately, his addiction gave him a heart attack at the age of 33. He should therefore continue to take medication for the rest of his life.

His mother is also sober and currently teaches therapy at a rehabilitation clinic in Rosebud, South Dakota.
