U.S. Sailor Missing More Than 2 Weeks Arrives Safely in Hawaii Ending Coast Guard Search

A 60-year-old sailor, Noel Rubio, has safely arrived in Hawaii with his 32-foot sailboat, Malulani, ending a tense search by the U.S. Coast Guard. Rubio’s journey from California to Hawaii captured public attention after the Coast Guard sought assistance to locate him over the weekend.

Setting sail from Long Beach on December 28 with plans to dock in Kaneohe on Oahu three weeks later, Rubio’s last known contact was a cellphone call made the day of his departure, near Catalina Island. Concerns grew when he failed to arrive as scheduled, prompting the Coast Guard to announce on Friday their extensive search efforts. These efforts included scouring harbors across California, Hawaii, and even extending into Mexico, coupled with urgent marine information broadcasts.

Despite the vast distances and the sailor’s limited means of communication — a VHF-FM marine band radio being his only link to the outside world — Rubio managed to navigate the Pacific and reach his destination without further incident.

The Coast Guard’s announcement of Rubio’s safe landing brings relief not only to his friends and family but also to the wider community that followed his journey.
