Ethiopian drama series are gaining popularity among the majority of the population. As access to technology continues to increase, viewers are being exposed to more and more TV shows and series.

1.Dana

Dana is an Ethiopian drama series produced by East African Film Production for ETV (Ethiopian TV). It stars Meron Getnet, Getnet Enyew, Tesfu Birhane, Yohannes Tefera, Selemon Alemu, Emebet Woldegebriel, Haregewoin Assefa, Michael Tamre, Tesfalem Tamirat and Kiros Haileselassie. Dana premiered on Sunday April 7th, 2013 and was an instant hit with Ethiopian audiences. Airing every Sunday, the show contains strong elements of drama and some comedy to give it a lighter twist at times. All episodes of Dana are available online and can be viewed on the ETV website under the Drama section. They can also be viewed in their entirety on YouTube.

2. Betoch

This is the next series that is highly recommended. Betoch is a Tilahun Gugsa Production for Ethiopian Television. Airing every Saturday, the comedy-drama draws a lot of attention from viewers who watch a show full of adventures, fun surprises and episodes. The show’s Facebook page is littered with comments from viewers expressing their love for this new drama. There are currently over 15 episodes, all available on the ETV website as well as YouTube. All episodes are commercially free for your viewing pleasure!

3. Sew Le Sew

A much longer-running drama than the previous two, this must-watch Ethiopian drama series is titled Sew Le Sew . It is another broadcast on Ethiopian TV and can be seen live on Ethiopian TV website. It is currently considered to be the hottest show on ETV with hundreds of thousands of viewers watching the latest episodes every week. The series has been running since 2011 and at the time of writing has almost 100 episodes, all of which are available online from the first episode. Viewers can also find summaries of previous episodes on the ETV website, so they can catch up quickly if they’ve missed previous episodes and don’t have the time to watch everything they missed.

4. Chelot

Chelot , a very popular series in Ethiopia, is gaining new viewers every week. It differs from all previously recommended shows as it is a courtroom drama series. Every week there is a new cast and the Ethiopian justice system. Many fans of the show state that they enjoy the positive direction of the Ethiopian court system and viewers are enabled to do so by Chelot. Topics range from divorce cases to situations children may find themselves in. Topics dealing with child labor are also very popular with viewers. Other topics include reckless driving, insurance issues (including fraud and payment), relationship disputes involving personal property and other assets, airport smuggling, and more. With each new episode, more topics are introduced. Chelot airs every Tuesday and can be seen live on ETV.

5. Kebebel

Kebebel is a relatively new Ethiopian drama series that aired in 2013 and has aired 15 episodes at the time of writing. Kebebel takes on a more serious tone and lacks the comedic tone that some of the previous recommendations take on. This is particularly noticeable in the show’s excellent background music, which adds to the tension and situations in the program. Kebebel can be seen live on ETV every week and can also be found in his entirety on YouTube.
